Elon Musk’s new social media company X announced this week that it plans to hire 100 employees specifically for content moderation. This comes amidst widespread concern over the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful content on social media platforms.
Musk stated that content moderation is “essential” for building trust in the new platform. “We want X to be a digital town square where people can freely express their opinions, but where hate speech, bullying, and other toxic content have no home,” he said. “To make that vision a reality, we need a dedicated team of professionals moderating content 24/7.”
The 100 moderators will be tasked with reviewing user posts and removing any that violate X’s community guidelines. The team will utilize human review and AI tools to quickly and accurately identify rule-breaking content.
Experts say that hiring a significant number of human moderators shows that Musk understands the complexity and nuance involved in content moderation.

“AI alone cannot adequately identify the contextual differences between harmless jokes and genuine threats of violence,” said Dr. Mary Johnson, a professor of ethics and technology at Stanford University. “You need empathetic humans in the loop making thoughtful judgments. I’m encouraged that Elon Musk recognizes this with his plan to hire moderators.”
Musk stated the new moderators will come from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints to ensure fair and accurate enforcement of policies.
“We want moderators who can put themselves in the shoes of X users and treat them with compassion,” said Musk. “This is not an easy job, but we must get it right.”

In a follow-up tweet, Musk provided additional details on the hiring plan:
“We will be hiring our first 100 moderators in the next three months. They will receive intensive training in our content policies and how to enforce them consistently and respectfully. If we find that 100 is not sufficient, we will continue hiring more moderators until we can adequately support X’s community.”
Musk also revealed that moderators will have access to mental health resources due to the difficult nature of the job. Viewing toxic content daily can take a psychological toll.
“We will ensure our moderators have access to the mental health support they may need,” said Musk. “This is work that requires emotional strength and resilience. We want our moderators to know that their well-being is a top priority.”
The CEO hopes the substantial investment in human content moderation will spur more civil discourse on the platform.

“The purpose of moderation is to limit the reach of harmful posts, not to be punitive,” Musk tweeted. “We aim for X to allow freer speech while keeping our community safe and welcoming. Our moderators play a crucial role in realizing that vision.”
