Elon Musk’s platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has been undergoing significant transformations since the billionaire’s acquisition last year. Musk envisions turning the social network into a multifunctional mega app, encompassing features like calls and even payments.
Alongside this evolution, Musk aims to expand the X Premium paid service by introducing different subscription tiers, including one that offers users the option to eliminate ads completely.
Previously known as Twitter Blue, X Premium offers exclusive features to its subscribers, such as app icon customization, post-editing, text formatting, extended posts and videos, and access to X Pro (formerly known as TweetDeck).
While current X Premium subscribers experience fewer ads in their timeline than non-paying users, Musk’s plan is to provide the choice of ad removal entirely – albeit at a higher price point.
The latest version of the X app, uncovered by researcher Aaron, contains code hinting at the introduction of three new X Premium tiers: Basic, Standard, and Plus.
The Basic tier would still display ads to users, whereas the Standard tier would offer a reduction in ad frequency. The Plus tier, on the other hand, promises a completely ad-free experience.
X Premium is priced at $8 per month or $84 per year. However, if users subscribe via the X app on iOS or Android, the price increases to $11 per month and $115 per year due to the 30% commission imposed by the App Store and Google Play Store.
The cost of the new subscription tiers and the migration process for existing subscribers remain unclear at this time.
