X, previously Twitter, has announced that it will charge users a one-time price of $1 per year under a new subscription plan called ‘Not A Bot.

The firms claimed in a message on the official X support handle that this move, which is effective immediately, will affect new users joining the platform through its website in New Zealand and the Philippines.

The major purpose of this subscription charge is to address the platform’s continuous challenges with spam, manipulation, and bot activity.

They added in the statement that the decision is part of X’s ongoing efforts to build a safer and more honest online environment.

Users’ reactions to the announcement were divided, with some expressing fear over the end of the free era on X. “This is the start of a huge mistake, be very very very careful,” one person remarked. Is it worth losing legitimate users to solve the bot problem?”

“Yep, that’s it,” another said. That is Twitter’s formal demise.”

On the web version of the site, the monthly cost will apply to basic functions such as posting material, liking, reposting, quoting other accounts’ posts, and bookmarking posts. This modification has no effect on existing users.

According to Reuters, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet previously stated, “In many cases, your platforms’ algorithms have amplified this content, contributing to a dangerous cycle of outrage, engagement, and redistribution.”

The new ‘Not A Bot’ membership model is intended to reduce the destructive impact of bots and spammers on the network.

New users who do not subscribe will be limited to read-only actions, such as viewing posts, watching videos, and following accounts but not actively engaging with the material.

Elon Musk, the founder of X, confirmed the choice, saying, “Correct, read for free, but write for $1/year.” It is the only approach to combat bots without blocking legitimate users.”

X’s approach also includes phone number verification during the sign-up procedure. While the subscription model is now only available in New Zealand and the Philippines, there are indications that it may be extended to other nations in the future.

Currently, X charges a monthly subscription fee as part of its ‘X Premium’ membership plan. Twitter Blue subscriptions in India cost Rs 900 per month for both Android and iOS smartphones. The price for the web is Rs 650 per month.
